Residence permits, work permits and entry requirements
Work permits and residence permits
Liechtenstein has liberal employment laws, which offer businesses maximum flexibility for appointing personnel. The laws enable businesses to adapt more rapidly to changes in the core markets. Furthermore, traditionally and intentionally the country’s bureaucracy is kept to a minimum. Further information can be found on the homepage of the Migration and Passport Office: www.apa.llv.li.
Work permits
- Swiss nationals:
Appointment requires neither foreign police authorisation nor an obligation to register.
- EEA nationals:
Appointment is subject to an obligation to register, the employee is issued with a cross-border confirmation of registration
- Non-member state nationals:
Cross-border permit is required. This is valid for one year and is issued by the Migration and Passport Office subject to certain conditions.
Residence permits
- Swiss nationals and EEA nationals:
Every year 28 residence permits (B) are granted to EEA and Swiss nationals who are gainfully employed in Liechtenstein. Half of these residence permits (B) are allocated by lottery, for which only EEA nationals are eligible.
- Non-member state nationals:
B permits can be obtained if the applicant is a manager, specialist or another kind of qualified employee with completed professional training or many years of professional experience.
- Requirements and obligatory visa for entry into Liechtenstein
As a rule, Liechtenstein and Switzerland have the same entry requirements. The requirements concerning persons obliged to obtain a visa are for the most part identical. Subject to divergent provisions on the basis of bilateral or multilateral agreements.
Persons obliged to obtain a visa can apply to the relevant Swiss representative office of the country of their place of residence abroad. Information on whether a visa is required can be found under www.bfm.admin.ch or in Liechtenstein State Gazette LGBl. 2011 No. 572.
